Co-composting Plant:

Due to a rapid trend of urbanization, the smalltowns and cities of Bangladesh are facing a challenge with regard to health, hygiene, sanitation and environmental hazard. In urban areas, the increase insanitation coverage using septic tanks and pit latrines, have raised sludgevolume from waste water discharge considerably.

Moreover, accumulated sludge overflows into nearbyopen drains, water bodies, near by forest and agricultural land  causes dangerous impact on public health and environment.  Failure toprovide long term households  and FSMsolutions risks will undermine the progress made through increased toilet use.Though it is the responsibility of municipality to manage solid waste generatedwithin the municipality, a major portion of this waste is not properly andscientifically handled due to shortage of resources. Furthermore, in somemunicipalities, like Sakhipur under Tangail district where a great number ofpoultry firm are operating, generating huge quantities of poultry litters dailyis a great concern. As these poultry litters are discharged into nearby ponds, canals or drains and open field, this is also causing environmental pollutionand health hazards.

Under this project, as a part of environmentaldevelopment initiatives, a co-composting plant is currently under operation todeal with wastes generated from fecal sludge, solid wastes and poultry littersin Sakhipur, Municipality under Tangail district.  Co composting Plant isa Biological Process that involves micro-organisms that decompose organicmatter under aerobic environment. The Resulting end Product is stabilizedorganic matter that can be used as a soil conditioner. Fecal Sludge has a highmoisture and nitrogen content while biodegradable soiled waste is high inorganic carbon and has good baking properties.

As it is the only co-composting plant where we canmanage both fecal sludge and kitchen waste so this plant/ project has alreadyrecognized by Local Govt.authority, Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation ( PKSF),Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and also some of Internationalagencies namely Water Aid, World Bank and others.
